Put the Giving back into Thanksgiving

“If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian, he can live in peace…..Treat all men alike. Give them all the same law. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers. The Earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it…….Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade….where I choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to think and talk and act for myself, and I will obey every law, or submit to the penalty.”  – Chief JosephNez Perce

I have a lot to be grateful for this year on Thanksgiving as everyone else should be. Do I really need to take just ONE day out of the year to give thanks and celebrate? Shouldn’t every bite of food from every meal contain a thought of “Thank you” behind it?

Why do we create such an outrageous big deal behind it? Do we really have to schedule it in the calender to remember to say thanks?

We gather every year to remember our ancestors. They were people who were fleeing persecution or looking to gain land.  We did not understand how to survive when we landed here. The land seemed empty and there were not any typical buildings in sight. The weather was cold and the food was scarce. The Native Americans gave us the knowledge to grow food. That is why we take today to eat such a large meal. It is supposed to remind us that food is a gift from the land. It is not always going to be there. There are times where there will be plenty so treasure those moments do not take them for granted! However there will be times when food will lack in abundance. Look at the bees? They are dropping by the millions. Without them you would not eat.

While we celebrate the Native Americans of today are starving and dyeing of thirst. Our land is dyeing with them. See they knew this land before you. We were born with this land we will die as our earth continues to die.

Your Creator or creators whomever he or she may be gave you seeds. Try this. Take your hand and set it open palm facing up on the table. I want you to think really hard about what a seed looks like. Then Open your eyes. Do you have a seed? I doubt it. You cannot create the seed that gave you those mashed potatoes. You cannot create the egg that created that turkey. Walmart did not create your Turkey! Neither did Safeway!

Teach your children that this land is a gift. That you once played on the streets that they now play on. Teach them that you used to hike in the parks that they are hiking in today. They have to understand that there will be people after them just like there were people before them.

Imagine that your body carries lego men and women. Your body represents the earth. Now your blood represents the oil. Imagine all the lego men drilling into your veins over and over again. Non stop. That is what we are doing when we continue to frack. We frack to keep the system going. Keeping the system going gives us our supplies everything from food to entertainment.

We need to not just say we are grateful. The ones that gave us our life need us to show that we are grateful. Get off the TVs, Facebook, and Football today. Please. Please at least take a part of the day to give back to the earth in some way. We made a commitment a few weeks ago to be vegetarian. That is our way of giving Thanks. Giving up meat for the better good of not only our bodies but our planet. (Random Gross fact: Meat can sit in the intestines for 20 days!)

Have you ever heard of a plant called hemp? If we break her down into oil she can fill our tanks.  We no longer need to pump the blood from the earth. Hemp seeds also contain more protein then any living meat source ever could! If you are eating a bloody animal over hemp seeds you are wasting your money! Logically speaking you are.

We need to develop the tools to utilize the oil that has already been provided for us ABOVE the earth.

Please stop just saying Thank you. Put the Give into Thanks GIVING.  For one year just make a commitment to do as little harm as possible!
